Mike & Joanna

After living in the city, Mike and Joanna found themselves looking for space to spread out with their new addition, Stella. Little did they know that moving to Elkins Park would set them on journey of community love and home renovation. They moved into a 90 year old home that had been empty for years. Over the course of their ownership, they’ve made an incredible amount of changes to modernize it while still keeping the charm and character of the home. They’ve also built lifelong friendships with the community that surrounds them, especially their neighbors. They’ve watched Stella grow up here and are incredibly sad to leave, but will be moving to paradise (aka Florida) for some much needed sunshine and Grandma time. Get to know the story of 912 Melrose Avenue and how Mike and Joanna made this house a home.

How would you describe your personal interior design style?
Transitional, comfortable, homey, welcoming, calming. We both met as teenagers working for a furniture store so we wanted something that could pass for a showroom but also felt comfortable enough to throw your feet up. Lots of the little accents are from the many trips that we've taken together.

If you could only choose one song to play every time you walked into a room, what would it be?
Happy - Pharrell

How would you describe your neighborhood?
Amazing, Welcoming, Friendly. The first day we looked at the house we met our neighbor who was born on the next block over and has since live in two homes on our block. Our families have grown very close over the years and we hate to leave them. The block is very diverse and everyone is super friendly and helpful. The first winter we were here I got sick and the neighbors shoveled our snow and dropped food off for us. It was really great!

If you could use your house as the setting for a remake of a movie, which movie would it be?
This is 40. We have entertained so much in this house and its always chaos but we love it

What was your non-negotiable when it came to finding your dream home?
Big backyard, Home with character. We were living in the city when Joanna got pregnant. We were in a two year lease so we had plenty of time to find a home. We must have looked at 25 homes in the Tri county area. We kept striking out. Our house was a bank owned property with horrible pictures that came up in every search. On a whim we went and looked at it. It needed work but it felt just right. We've put so much love and hard work into this house, we are really going to miss it.

What's your favorite room? Why?
Our favorite rooms change throughout the seasons. In the spring and fall we love the front porch. You can sit, have your coffee, and watch the birds and neighbors go by. Its so peaceful. At Thanksgiving and Christmas its the living room. Always filled with friends, neighbors, family. Oh and a tree that scrapes the ceiling.

What is one thing you need in your home to make it yours?
Family. Sometimes we get caught up running from place to place or sucked into our jobs. When we all finally get to sit together at the table or watch a movie together, you really get a sense of home.

What makes you (or your family) laugh?
Dance party. We always have music on in the house. Our daughter likes to play dance games and is really competitive. Then Mom and Dad have to break out our 90's moves to show her how its done. We laugh so hard.

If you could throw a theme party in your house, what would be the theme?
Disco / Funk Dance Party. How can you not dance and act like a fool to this music?

A day spent running around the neighborhood: what's your first stop and last stop?

Moving to Elikins Park we thought it was going to be an older quiet community. Boy we were wrong. You will always see people out for a walk, hanging out at the local Farmers Market which is our first stop. After running a few errands we'll either stop at Trios Pizza for lunch and or stop by Goat House or Ritas for ice cream.

How has your home changed from move-in day?
It was pretty bad when we moved in. It had been empty for years. We put a lot of love and thought into this house. We tried to modernize it while keeping the character of a 90 yr old home. We haven't had the chance to finish everything but its totally different from when we bought it. For years the front mail box hung from one screw basically falling off. The very first thing we did after closing was fix the mail box. We wanted to let the neighborhood know we were here, and committed to fixing up the house to a level the block deserved.

What's your favorite memory of your home?
Watching Stella learn to walk in the living room. She just turned 1 when we moved in. We had a big corral in the living room where she could roam around without getting into trouble.

What was the catalyst to you purchasing a new home?
This home- Was Stella being born and wanted the space. We were moving out of the city and wanted more space without being too far from center city. Two train stations within walking distance was a plus. We are moving to experience living in paradise. Its rare that you have the opportunity to relocate and take your jobs with you. My mom moved to Fort Myers about 20 years ago so we are moving to Naples to sunshine, beach, and palm trees. Oh, and to keep an eye on Mom.

What's your favorite piece of Philly culture?
Stella is fascinated with Billy Penn on top of City Hall. As a lover of live music I took Joanna to so many local shows. NYC is great but she loves the live music scene. I've lived here my whole life and there are so many things about Philly that I love but only one that really encapsulates Philly and that is Rocky. I know its cliche but its the truth.

What our clients say

Bought a home in Philadelphia, PA.

Buying a home can be an interesting experience full of highs and lows--especially in this market--but I can't recommend Zoe Fox enough to help you along this journey. She was a great educator and cheerleader throughout, and made the process absolutely seamless.

Bought a home in Philadelphia, PA.

We were so lucky to have Zoe as our realtor when buying our first home! She made the process so easy, and went above and beyond in order to make us feel more comfortable, even after closing. I would recommend Zoe and Philadelphia Home Collective to anyone looking to buy a home. Overall we couldn't have wished for a better team to support us through this!

Bought and sold a home in Philadelphia, PA.

We could not have been more pleased with the experience with Kristin McFeely and the Philadelphia Home Collective. We partnered with Kristin on both ends of the process -- finding a new home during a hyper-competitive market in Spring/Summer 2021 and selling our previous home in the Fall. She was patient & attentive during the months of the home search, always looking out for our best interests in the twists & turns of inspection issues, a declined offer, and tight timelines until we landed in the perfect home in Fishtown. Then she did a remarkable job highlighting our home and getting us an offer. We've received tons of compliments on the photography - her team really couldn't have done a better job making that house shine!

Sold a home in Philadelphia, PA.

All five stars for Sarah LoGiudice. She was our realtor when we bought, and we went with her again when we sold. When things got sticky or complicated, she guided us through them. We needed some home improvement work, she helped us find a skilled and trustworthy contractor. We had to be out of town, she stepped in for us. In the unusual market today, she helped us get the best offer, and the transaction came through without a hitch. Through it all, from purchasing to selling, she always listened to us, understood our needs, and helped us get exactly what we hoped for. If life brings us back to Philly, she will be the first person we call.

Bought and sold a home in Center City Philadelphia.

We both bought and sold a home in Center City with Bill Ball in the Spring of 2021 and I can’t say enough good things! In addition to understanding the market and knowing the city well, Bill really impressed us with his negotiation skills and ability to navigate the ups and downs of buying and selling. Buying and selling at the same time is always stressful, especially in a competitive market, but Bill took a lot of the stress out of the process for us. He was very responsive and always available for anything we needed. Just very easy to work with. The team and recommended inspector were great too. We highly recommend!

Sold multiple homes in Philadelphia.

The Philly Collective has helped us purchase and sell multiple homes with great success. Kristin McFeeley is the most professional Real Estate agent I have ever had the pleasure to do business. She is the connsumate professional, Real Estate or otherwise, she is responsive and caring to your concerns/questions. She looks after your interests as if they are her own. Sold a multi-family apartment building in Northwest Philly.

My husband and I just completed our second transaction with Kristin as our agent. This one was for the sale of a multi-family apartment building in Northwest Philadelphia. As she did with the purchase of our home 5 years ago, Kristin nailed every detail with professionalism. In this instance, I had stringent guidelines I needed fulfilled. Due to having tenants, I wanted Kristin herself handling the showings, I wanted showings limited to once a week, I only wanted qualified buyers viewing the property and making offers. Kristin didn't miss a beat. 8 days after listing we got an offer and she was fantastic through the due diligence period and closing. A great realtor is a gift and Kristin is the best out there. Her transaction agent Sean was fantastic as well.

Sold a home in 2021 in Manayunk, PA.

Sheena has helped us find two homes (one from across the country), and sell one. Her and her team's communicativeness, friendly attitudes, and attention to detail makes the entire process a joy. Having her team work for you lets you kick back, smoke some meats, and not worry about a thing while your deal goes through.

Found a tenant for a Single Family home in Philadelphia, PA.

We absolutely loved working with Dina! She is extremely knowledgeable and was able to explain all we had to do to get our home rented in Philadelphia. She took beautiful photos, secured great renters and helped build our lease. She was available when we needed her and promptly called us back when we had questions. I would highly recommend Dina if you are looking to buy or list a home in the Philadelphia or surrounding areas.

Bought a Townhouse home in 2021 in Philadelphia, PA.

Bill Ball assisted me in purchasing a home in the Center City area of Philadelphia. I am not a local and Bill's knowledge of the different areas helped me make an informed decision. I appreciated that he never tried to push me into a purchase or pressure me into making a decision. He was extremely responsive and assisted in managing the whole process from offer to closing. I highly recommend Bill for his professionalism, knowledge, honesty, and low pressure approach to very a stressful process.

Bought a Townhouse home in 2021 in Aston, PA.

First home buying success! Sean was with me step by step and answered all my first-time buyer's questions and he didn't miss a beat. Sean and I also had to go through this experience while dealing with the effects that the pandemic caused on the housing market but that didn't slow us down. Sean made my home buying experience painless and he would be the first person I would recommend should someone need these services!

Carly Harris is a tremendous realtor! She throws herself into her work, answers every single question a first time home buyer might throw her way (regardless of how small or weird the query) with a great deal of patience, and roots for her clients every step of the way. Buying a home can be daunting, but seeing Carly outside of a new listing with her mini flashlight and a big smile on her face, determined to help us find exactly what we were looking for, made the experience exponentially better.

I loved working with Kristin on my recent home purchase! Not only did she help me score my dream home, she made the process enjoyable and seamless. She explained the home buying process in a way that I could understand, which was helpful as a first-time buyer. What I appreciate most about Kristin is her deep and thorough knowledge of pretty much every neighborhood in Philly! I could tell this invaluable trait only comes after years of working on the ground in this great city and getting to know each neighborhood intimately. Plus – she’s just fun to hang out with!

Stefania is an excellent real estate agent. She willingly shares her expansive knowledge of the local area and constantly made herself available to answer my many questions. What really sets her apart from other agents is her attention to detail and understanding of the local real estate environment. Stefania will make sure that you meet all deadlines and prepares you for each step of the process. I would highly recommend her and I plan on using Stefania again when it is time to sell or buy my next home.
